Disruptive newcomer to India’s mobile market Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJIL) has completed its long-delayed commercial launch, unveiling an aggressive pricing strategy with a view to signing up 100 million users within ‘the shortest possible time’. Having come under fire from the incumbent cellcos for offering free services during its prolonged trial period, Jio has introduced its Welcome Offer, providing existing preview and new customers free voice, SMS and data services until 31 December 2016, as well as free subscriptions to its suite of applications until 31 December 2017. In a press release, Jio said it would use the time to fine-tune its services and to resolve interconnection and mobile number portability (MNP)-related issues, threatening to extend the free offer if the incumbents do not cooperate. As previously reported by CommsUpdate, the cellco complained that its rivals were attempting to stifle competition by restricting the newcomer’s interconnect capacity. Jio’s voice-over-LTE (VoLTE)-enabled 4G network is available in 18,000 cities and 200,000 villages across all 22 circles.
