Viettel to trial 4G from start of next year

18 Aug 2016

Mobile operator Viettel Cameroon, which operates under the Nexttel brand, plans to launch a trial 4G LTE network at the start of next year. Investir au Cameroun quotes the firm’s deputy general manager, Haman Oumar, as saying that the move towards offering higher speed mobile data services illustrates Viettel’s aim to offer the best service quality and coverage in the country. The company has also announced the launch of a new mobile app, ‘Nexttel TV’, which allows customers to watch films, TV and other content on their mobile devices. The cellco, which is majority-owned by Vietnamese telecoms firm Viettel Group, was awarded its mobile licence in December 2012 and eventually went on to launch commercial 2G and the country’s first UMTS services on 18 September 2014, notes TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database.
