MobiFone follows Viettel, Vinaphone with 4G trials

4 Jul 2016

MobiFone, Vietnam’s second largest mobile operator by subscribers, has announced the activation of its pilot 4G LTE network and a new digital television service, MobiTV, in the cities of Hanoi, Danang and Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City. The move follows the launch of trial LTE services by market leader Viettel Telecom in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province late last year, while third-placed VNPT-Vinaphone began testing LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) technology in Phu Quoc and HCM City in January. The Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) is expected to formally award 4G licences later this year or in early 2017.

In the same announcement, MobiFone revealed that it has activated a new north-south transmission backbone, which links 25 of Vietnam’s 63 provinces.
