Peru’s mobile operators invested USD5 billion between 2011 and 2015, TeleSemana cites Gonzalo Ruiz Diaz, the chairman of sector regulator Supervisory Agency for Private Investment in Telecommunications (Organismo Supervisor de Inversion Privada en Telecommuniciones, Osiptel) as saying. Over that period cellcos invested a total of around USD1 billion per year and that rate is expected to increase to roughly USD1.2 billion in 2016, USD900 million of which will relate to the deployment of LTE in the 700MHz band. ‘We are one of the few sectors of the economy that recorded an increase in private investment in 2015,’ the official explained, noting: ‘This shows that in this sector, innovation is one of the engines of growth.’ Commenting on the country’s infrastructure gap, Mr Diaz said that in 2012 the industry needed around 14,000 new antennas to meet demand, but the deficit is now half that amount, adding: ‘The gap is still large, especially in large cities where demand is growing faster.’
