MTS Ukraine expands 3G network, targets 50% coverage by end-2016

2 Jun 2016

MTS Ukraine (under the Vodafone Ukraine banner) has extended its 3G services to a further 50,000 inhabitants, located in Fastov city in the Kiev region, taking the cellco’s total 3G network coverage to more than 40% of the Ukrainian population. MTS notes that over 100 settlements in Kiev are now covered by the dual-carrier (DC)-HSPA+ technology, including twelve regional centres, while by the end of 2016 the operator expects its 3G network to be available to over 50% of the population nationwide.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, MTS Ukraine, which began rolling out third generation technology in July 2015, expanded an existing strategic partnership with the UK’s Vodafone Group in October that year when it announced that the Vodafone brand would be launched in Ukraine for 3G mobile services. MTS and Vodafone originally signed a non-equity strategic agreement in 2008, via which MTS gained exclusive access in Ukraine to a range of products, services and devices from Vodafone for both consumer and corporate markets.
