Thai cellco Advanced Info Service (AIS) on Friday won the re-auction of a 900MHz technology-neutral (4G) mobile spectrum licence at the starting price of THB75.65 billion (USD2.11 billion), via its subsidiary Advanced Wireless Network (AWN). There were no other bidders for the 2×10MHz licence, which had been left spare after Jasmine International’s start-up cellular venture Jas Mobile failed to pay for the frequencies it had won at auction in December. Alongside giving it more bandwidth for 4G expansion, AIS’ 900MHz win allows the operator to continue serving the remaining 2G 900MHz-only device owners on its network, whilst proactively migrating them to 3G/4G via ongoing handset subsidy promotions. AIS’ existing court-sanctioned extension to continue providing 2G 900MHz services on expired licensed frequencies was due to run out on 30 June.
