Digicel, Huawei showcase 10Gbps ‘XG-PON’ technology in Jamaica

24 May 2016

Digicel Group and Huawei Technologies of China have successfully showcased 10Gbps ‘XG-PON’ technology at the telco’s laboratory in downtown Kingston, Jamaica, using its existing fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) infrastructure. John Suranyi, CEO of Digicel Play Caribbean and Central America, commented: ‘This was a very exciting trial and we were blown away by the speeds reached and how simple it is to move to these speeds when the region needs it. This shows how we can evolve towards multi-Gigabit speeds as and when our customers demand it … To date we have invested over USD100 million in our FTTH fibre programme in Jamaica and our customers are starting to see the real benefits of our investment.’

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Digicel switched on its Jamaican FTTH network in December 2015, and went on to pass the 20,000-subscriber mark in April this year.
