Orange Romania launches 1Gbps fibre service; Telekom expands LTE coverage via Orange network sharing

20 May 2016

Orange Romania, the country’s largest cellco by subscribers, has confirmed the launch of 1Gbps fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) connectivity. Launched on 19 May, the ‘Orange Home Net’ branded service went live in Cluj-Napoca, Iasi and Timisoara. Coverage is expected to be extended to other urban areas later in the year. Also available are a pay-TV services offering 160 channels, fixed voice telephony and ‘Orange Smart Home’ functionality, which allows customers to monitor and control their home remotely.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, in December 2015 Orange Romania signed a wholesale network agreement with local quad-play operator Telekom Romania, which allowed Orange to offer fixed services via Telekom’s nationwide local access infrastructure, in exchange for national roaming access on Orange’s LTE network. The new fibre launch leverages this deal. Simultaneously, Telekom Romania’s mobile division has announced the extension of its LTE coverage to 96% of the urban population via the network sharing agreement with Orange.
