AIS sole contender for spare 900MHz licence after True drops out

Thai quadruple-play operator True Corp has decided not to participate in the upcoming 900MHz 4G licence auction scheduled for 27 May, TelecomAsia reports. Rival DTAC previously said it would not take part in the contest, meaning that mobile market leader AIS will be the sole applicant for the 2×10MHz concession, which was left vacant after Jasmine failed to pay for its spectrum won at auction in December. True had already paid for the other 900MHz block auctioned.

True’s letter to the Securities Exchange Commission said that following the board’s meeting on 16 May, True has decided not to participate in the auction as it has enough high frequency spectrum for capacity (1800MHz and 2100MHz) and low frequency spectrum for coverage (850MHz via its partnership with CAT and 900MHz directly) to meet demand. A few days earlier at a panel organised by Thailand’s IT Press Club, NBTC secretary-general Takorn Tantasit stated that AIS had decided to participate in the auction.

Meanwhile, it has also been confirmed that a mooted 900MHz mobile network rental agreement between AIS and True will not happen, as the rivals could not agree on a compromise. AIS had been looking at ways to continue serving remaining 2G-only 900MHz device owners in the event of losing direct access to 900MHz frequencies.
