Vodafone agrees to purchase former Optimus FTTH network

13 May 2016

Vodafone Portugal has exercised an option to purchase the fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network that it co-owned with the now-defunct Optimus, reports Dinheiro Vivo. The move is in line with conditions set by the Portuguese Competition Authority (Autoridade da Concorrencia, AdC) in regards to its approval of the merger between cableco Zon Multimedia and full-service telecoms provider Optimus, which closed in August 2013, creating new company Zon Optimus (Nos). As stated in Nos’ 2015 annual report: ‘On 26 February 2016, Vodafone exercised its option to purchase the FTTH network of Optimus, located in the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto, its purchase price being the book value of that network, net of depreciation.’

According to TeleGeopgraphy’s GlobalComms Database, in December 2009 Vodafone reached an agreement with the now-defunct Optimus, regarding mutual cooperation in the construction, management, maintenance and operation of a fibre-optic NGN in the main urban centres. In August 2013, as part of Optimus’ takeover by Zon Multimedia, the Portuguese Competition Authority demanded that the enlarged operator extend the duration of the existing fibre pact, so as not to disadvantage Vodafone. Subsequently, Optimus was obliged to negotiate a call option with Vodafone for the sale of its independent fibre network.
