In and around the lake: Tigo Tanzania extends 4G to five more towns

10 May 2016

Tigo Tanzania says it has extended the reach of its 4G LTE network to five more towns in the country’s lake region, noting that commercial services will soon be available in Tabora, Musoma, Bukoba, Kigoma and Shinyanga. In a press release on its website, the cellco confirmed that it first launched the service in Dar es Salaam early last year before expanding to Arusha, Tanga, Dodoma, Morogoro, Moshi and Mwanza, providing end users with what it claims to be the fastest and biggest 4G LTE network in Tanzania. Tigo says it is currently working around the clock to maintain and enhance the quality of service (QoS) of its new network and, as a result, has optimised 4G in all cities already covered.

Speaking at a press conference in Dar es Salaam, Tigo general manager Diego Gutierrez said the cellco plans to expand 4G coverage ‘to all corners of the country’, in line with its commitment ‘to give its customers world class services that enable them to enjoy a fully digital lifestyle’. This year Tigo is investing over USD75 million on the network expansion and QoS measures, in the process upscaling its 3G and 4G cell sites, as well as its fibre network. ‘We are also currently embarking on a network modernisation programme which includes increasing 4G capacity in all twelve cities where we have 4G, as well as increasing considerably the 3G coverage countrywide,’ Gutierrez added, noting too that Tigo customers in Mbeya, Mtwara and Lindi will be getting 4G in the near future.
