Cell C switches on LTE-A in three cities

26 Apr 2016

South African mobile operator Cell C has launched commercial LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) services in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town, reports TechCentral. The new high speed network, which uses paired spectrum in both the 1800MHz and 2100MHz frequency bands, will be expanded to KwaZulu-Natal by the third quarter of the year. A number of ‘category 6’ handsets are able to access the LTE-A network, including the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, Apple iPhone 6s, Apple iPhone 6s Plus, Huawei Mate 8_DS, Samsung Galaxy S7 and LG G5.

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Cell C’s rollout of LTE-A follows earlier launches of the technology by rival operator Telkom South Africa (November 2014), Vodacom (January 2016) and MTN (March 2016).
