DNA claims it will offer Finland’s first VoLTE with pilot launch

15 Mar 2016

Finland’s third-placed mobile operator DNA claimed in a press release yesterday that it will be the first in the country to introduce voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) technology across its nationwide mobile network, whilst also announcing an upgrade to support voice-over-WiFi (VoWiFi) technology. The deployments are being made available to pilot customers this spring.

The release continues that Finnish operators’ 4G networks currently only carry data whilst all calls are transmitted across 2G and 3G networks. VoLTE enables phone calls across 4G networks, which improves voice quality and shortens the connection time of calls to a fraction of what it is now. VoWiFi technology allows users to make phone calls from their home, office, or public places such as airports using Wi-Fi, thereby improving voice quality and indoor reception, if, for example, the user lives far away from the nearest base station. Wi-Fi calls made abroad will also typically be cheaper than normal roaming calls.

‘We will be testing these new technologies with our customers during the spring, and will then gradually make the technologies available to all our 4G mobile communication subscribers’, announced DNA’s Mika Husso.

Both new technologies are dependent on the handset. Mobile phone manufacturers’ most advanced models, such as Samsung Galaxy S7, Apple iPhone 6S and Microsoft Lumia 950, typically support both technologies, whilst manufacturers are also expected to make their more affordable models compatible with these technologies in the future.
