Vodafone Italy has announced that it has carried out trials of 4G LTE mobile equipment which can boost peak download speeds to up to 1.2Gbps. The tests combined all available frequencies using carrier aggregation technology, with the cellco saying mobile speeds of 1Gbps-plus open the way for applications such as connected cars and advanced telemedicine. Meanwhile, Vodafone has trialled 10GPON technology on its fibre networks which has delivered peak downstream rates of 10Gbps. Both trials used technology from Chinese vendor Huawei. Vodafone Italy currently covers 95% of the population with its LTE infrastructure, while its fibre broadband services are available to some 7.8 million premises in over 200 cities and towns across the country.
