100,000 Irish premises to receive 1Gbps broadband by March 2017

3 Mar 2016

Irish full service telco eir (formerly Eircom) has announced that it will connect 100,000 homes and businesses – spread across 200 communities in all 26 counties – to fibre-optic broadband speeds of up to 1Gbps over the next twelve months. Preparation for the deployment is already underway, with fibre cables scheduled to be installed alongside existing roadside telecommunications infrastructure. The operator notes that this announcement is part of the commitment it made in June 2015 to extend its fibre footprint to a further 300,000 homes and businesses to reach a total of 1.9 million premises by the end of 2020. Currently, eir says 1.4 million homes and businesses can access high speed broadband in Ireland, while the company remains on target to reach 1.7 million premises by this time next year.

Carolan Lennon, Managing Director of wholesale division open eir, commented: ‘We are the only provider with a truly national plan to connect rural communities across Ireland to high speed broadband. We already provide the fastest broadband speeds in the country and we are now extending those speeds beyond the town. Last June, we committed to extend the reach of our commercial rollout as far as possible. Our announcement today is testament to our ongoing support of the economic recovery and rejuvenation of rural Ireland using best in class technology.’

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, eir successfully trialled 1Gbps fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) technology in the rural community of Belcarra in County Mayo in May 2015, after commencing work on its FTTH rollout in November 2014.
