nbn (formerly NBN Co), the company overseeing Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN) project, has rejected claims that it is at risk of not meeting its targets, following recent suggestions in the local press. In a press release the company has defended the current rollout status, stressing that it remains ‘on track to meet or exceed its full year targets of 2.6 million homes Ready For Service [RFS], approximately one million homes using the network, and more than AUD300 million in revenue’. Further, with nbn arguing that its management team had ‘proven repeatedly that it can effectively monitor risks and manage those risks’, it said it would not be drawn on alleged internal documents, noting that it reports on a quarterly basis, adding that its results are audited.
With regards to the infrastructure project itself, nbn called it ‘an incredibly complex project unlike any infrastructure build anywhere in the world’. In terms of the progress it has made thus far, the company revealed that as at 18 February 2016 nearly 1.8 million homes can now order a service and more than 800,000 homes are already connected and using the network. In addition, the company claimed that it was now tracking more than 10,000 new activations per week. Looking ahead, nbn has said that by the end of this financial year (30 June 2016) it is on track for nearly one in four homes to be able to order a service, while by June 2018 it expects this to rise to three in four.
