Belarus round-up: Beltelecom lays out four-year fibre transformation programme; Atlant Telecom introduces budget Ethernet; Home Network launches unlimited tariff plans

26 Feb 2016

State-owned fixed line and broadband operator Beltelecom is embarking on a four-year network transformation plan to migrate its entire Minsk customer base from copper wire to fibre, reports Providers.by. The director of the firm’s Minsk City Telephone Network division Edward Belokurskogo confirmed that by 2020, all the subscribers in the capital will be connected via fibre-optic cabling. Belokurskogo notes that since 2011 Beltelecom has been upgrading its PSTN with GPON technology and had 130,000 subscribers by the start of this year. Further, the operator has also been actively expanding its public Wi-Fi network in Minsk and now boats 952,000 points of access and a further 99,000 via modems installed in subscribers’ homes.

Belarusian broadband ISP Atlant Telecom, part of the Alternative Digital Network group, has introduced a budget Ethernet service plan for customers in the regions of Vitebsk, Gomel and Mogilev. Branded ‘Light’, the new Ethernet tariffs promise internet access speeds up to 15Mbps and a free Wi-Fi router, for BYR144,000 (USD6.68) per month.

Elsewhere, another ISP – Infolan.by, which brands its services as Home Network – this week unveiled a new range of unlimited residential broadband tariff plans, replacing its former ‘aion’ plans. The ISP’s latest offering includes download speeds of 10Mbps, 25Mbps, 50Mbps and 100Mbps, with prices ranging from BYR135,000 to BYR345,000 per month. Minsk-based Infolan.by was founded in 2007 and in April that year was issued with a licence from the Ministry of Communications and Informization to build and operate a high speed data network.
