Vodafone Spain targeting 94% 4G coverage by end-March 2016

17 Feb 2016

Vodafone Spain is planning to extend its 4G network to more than 2,800 municipalities, or over 94% of the population, by the end of March 2016. Detailing its rollout plans, the cellco noted that all municipalities of more than 15,000 inhabitants will be within the network footprint by the end of the first quarter, as well as 80% of municipalities with a population of more than 5,000. Vodafone Spain pointed to its deployment of LTE using the 800MHz spectrum as one factor which had helped boost its coverage, especially in-building, confirming that some 2,000 municipalities currently have 4G access via the aforementioned frequency.

Alongside this, Vodafone Spain also revealed that it is now offering downlink speeds of up to 400Mbps in 30 major cities via the deployment of LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) technology, which it offers under the ‘4G+’ banner. Among the cities where these higher speeds are available are: Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, Coruna, Valencia and Santander. The cellco noted, however, that customers must have a device that supports these higher speeds, such as the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+. Looking ahead, meanwhile, the operator has said it anticipates being able to boost download speeds further, to 600Mbps in enterprise environments by end-2016, thanks to its access to 20MHz of time division duplex (TDD)-LTE-suitable spectrum.
