Idea launches LTE in three new circles, maps out expansion plans

15 Jan 2016

Idea Cellular, India’s third largest cellco by subscribers, has launched LTE services in three new circles, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, adding to its existing footprint of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, where the cellco inaugurated its 4G platform in late December 2015. Looking ahead, Idea plans to cover 183 towns across those seven circles by the end of the month, whilst coverage will be extended to Maharashtra, North East and Orissa by the end of March, extending services to all ten areas where Idea holds 1800MHz spectrum. A total of 750 cities are scheduled to be covered by the cellco’s LTE network by end-June. Further, Idea noted that it has recently signed an agreement with Videocon, allowing it to use the latter’s 1800MHz frequencies in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh West. Following the completion of the deal, Idea will launch 4G services in these two circles, a statement from the operator noted.

Chief Marketing Officer Sashi Shankar commented on the launch: ‘Idea customers with 4G devices in these 183 towns can now start experiencing superfast speeds by simply upgrading their existing SIM cards to new 4G SIM cards. The company is also offering attractive subscription plans to digital content, including a wide range of the latest music, movies and games. Idea has also partnered with leading handset manufacturers and e-commerce retailers for special data bundling offers on new 4G smartphones.’
