Telekom launches VoLTE

12 Jan 2016

Telekom Deutschland, the domestic fixed and mobile unit of Deutsche Telekom (DT), has become the latest German wireless operator to launch commercial voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) services, after Vodafone Germany and Telefonica Deutschland introduced the technology last year. Telekom says that with HD Voice, VoLTE offers ‘crystal clear’ voice quality across the 4G network, as well as rapid call setup and high speed data transfer. The new service is available at no extra charge for customers with a fixed term contract and a VoLTE-capable smartphone, such as the Samsung Galaxy S5, Microsoft’s Lumia 950 and the Sony Xperia Z5.

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, Vodafone Germany became the first German operator to initiate the rollout of VoLTE in March 2015, demonstrating the first live VoLTE call on its network at the CeBIT 2015 technology fair in Hanover, while one month later Telefonica Deutschland activated the service over the O2 network for certain smartphone devices.
