TTCL’s 4G LTE data network goes live in Dar es Salaam region

23 Dec 2015

Tanzania Telecommunication Company Ltd (TTCL) has announced the launch of its fourth-generation LTE network in Dar es Salaam which will offer mobile broadband internet access for smartphones and data terminals. The operator’s head of commercial operations Fredrick Mloka told reporters that the launch ‘marks the beginning of TTCL’s transformational journey … starting with eleven sites in Dar es Salaam region’. The operator has an aggressive strategy plan to secure market share by extending its coverage and, with funding from the TIB Development Bank, ‘TTCL will erect more infrastructures to have eleven regions covered by the end of 2016,’ he said. In total, some 266 towers are needed to provide blanket coverage of the whole of the region, but for now the eleven areas covered are: the Julius Nyerere International Airport Pugu Road and the New Posta Office (central business district), Upanga, Kinondoni, Ubungo, Oysterbay, Mwenge, Mbezi Tangibovu, Mbezi Exchange, Kunduchi Salasala and Wazo Tegeta. ‘We hope that by the end of the first quarter 2016, a big part of Dar es Salaam region which is already surveyed, will be covered by roaming before rolling up into other parts of the country,’ he added. Further, by the end of 2016 Mloka confirmed that large areas of the other ten regions and main roads will be covered with 4G LTE and a ‘limited’ 3G coverage. These are Mwanza, Mbeya, Arusha, Dodoma, Mtwara, Tanga, Kilimanjaro, Iringa, Morogoro and Zanzibar. At the end of TTCL’s five-year rollout plan, all regions and main roads in the country will have 4G.
