The Bank of Uganda says the country was home to 19.8 million mobile money customers at the end of September, up 2.1 million from twelve months earlier. Mobile money users in Uganda now outnumber traditional bank account holders by almost four-to-one. The country’s main cellcos – MTN, Airtel, Uganda Telecom Ltd (UTL) and Africell – all offer mobile money products. Uganda was home to an estimated 22.7 million cellular subscribers at the end of September 2015, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database.
