CK Hutchison subsidiary 3 Macau has launched its 4G LTE mobile network, making it the fourth and final LTE licensee to introduce commercial 4G services in the Special Administrative Region (SAR), after Companhia de Telecomunicacoes de Macau (CTM), SmarTone Macau and China Telecom Macau. 3’s new high speed mobile data service is based on ZTE’s FDD-LTE radio and core network technology, and provides more than 90% outdoor coverage, covering areas such as Porto Exterior, Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, Areia Preta and Taipa, including main business districts, large housing estates, shopping malls, hotels, conference and exhibition centres. A press release adds that customers can expect ‘fast and stable speeds’ up to 112Mbps (download) and 37.5Mbps (upload) over the network’s 15MHz paired spectrum in the 1800MHz band. 3 Macau also plans to launch voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) capability ‘in the middle of next year’. The operator has invested more than MOP300 million (USD36.65 million) so far to develop its 4G network.
