Viettel Telecom, Vietnam’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, has officially launched a trial of 4G LTE services in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province. The company has installed around 200 4G base transceiver stations (BTS) to provide coverage in parts of Vung Tau City, Ba Ria City and Long Dien District. Users will be given a free SIM card to test the new network, which currently offers average maximum download speeds of between 40Mbps and 80Mbps. Viettel Telecom’s general director Nguyen Dung said the firm is prepared to roll out a commercial 4G service as soon as it is awarded the requisite licence from the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC), which could take place in early 2016.
