Finnish vendor Nokia Networks, working with South Korea’s largest cellco by subscribers SK Telecom (SKT), has demonstrated 428Mbps data transmission rates via what it claims was ‘the industry’s first TD-LTE 3x carrier aggregation [CA] with 256 quadrature amplitude modulation [QAM]’, utilising a Qualcomm Snapdragon X12 LTE modem from Qualcomm Technologies. Nokia Networks said it represented a ‘key development that lays the foundation for the introduction of TD-LTE in Korea’, adding that the trial verified the benefits of 3x CA combined with 256 QAM-capable devices, which can boost peak throughput from 110Mbps to 428Mbps, Nokia Networks has suggested that its Single RAN Advanced platform provides a strong foundation for SKT to construct an advanced TD-LTE network capable of addressing the demand for bandwidth-intensive services. Looking ahead, both companies have confirmed they will strengthen their collaboration by establishing a TD-LTE test bed and conducting trials of TD-LTE services.
