Airtel has confirmed that it has switched on its new 4G LTE network in Libreville, the capital and largest city of Gabon. According to a series of announcements on the telco’s Facebook page, the network was activated on 10 December. The launch brings Airtel in line with rival Gabon Telecom, which unveiled its own 4G offers in October 2014, claiming a first for Central Africa.
As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, in July this year Airtel Gabon selected Swedish vendor Ericsson to deploy its 4G network. The telco paid USD11.55 million for a ten-year 3G/4G licence in March 2014.
