3G progress: Kyivstar reaches 500 settlements, switches off TriMob roaming; MTS covers twelve main cities

11 Dec 2015

Ukraine’s largest mobile operator by users Kyivstar has announced reaching its 500th settlement with its 3G W-CDMA/HSPA+ network, after switching on services in the town of Striy and the surrounding villages of Dulibi, Slobidka and Mirtyuki in the Lviv region. Kyivstar, part of the Russian-backed VimpelCom group says it currently has the largest concentrations of 3G users in Kiev, Dnipropetrovsk, Odessa, Lviv and Vinnitsia.

Separately, Kyivstar has decided to stop providing W-CDMA/HSDPA national roaming services over the network of rival operator TriMob, part of Ukrtelecom, from 31 December 2015, when the wholesale agreement expires. Early this year Kyivstar revealed that the data-only 3G roaming service had a relatively low user volume (less than 25,000), while it is concentrating on the rapid expansion of its own UMTS network since 2100MHz licensing in February. From 16 December, Kyivstar subscribers using ‘Internet 3G’ and ‘Click 3G’ roaming-based tariffs over the TriMob network can switch to a Kyivstar package.

Also this week, the country’s second largest cellco MTS Ukraine (now using the Vodafone Ukraine 3G branding) has expanded its commercial HSPA+ network coverage to its twelfth major city, Poltava, having previously spread its UMTS footprint across Sumi, Uzhgorod, Lviv, Mukacheve, Bukovel, Chernivtsi, Odessa, Lutsk, Chernihiv, Mikolayiv and Kiev, plus surrounding areas and other smaller towns. It also previously reported that the network, which is based on dual-carrier (DC)-HSPA+ technology (42Mbps theoretical peak speed), is operational in parts of Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk.
