French telecoms group Orange is reportedly considering the acquisition of one of its European counterparts. A report from the Wall Street Journal suggests that Orange’s acquisition targets include Proximus of Belgium, KPN of the Netherlands, Italy’s Telecom Italia and French rival Iliad. The paper cites ‘people familiar with the matter’, one of whom said that Orange wants to ‘swallow rather than be swallowed’. Previous reports have also linked Orange as a possible buyer for another French operator, Bouygues Telecom. Telecom Italia recently announced that it had had no contact with Orange over a potential tie-up. The Orange Group is the tenth largest telco in the world by global revenues, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, with sales of EUR39.5 billion (USD52.3 billion) in 2014 and a presence in over 30 countries.
