A1 Telekom Austria launches VoLTE; UPC rebranding on the horizon

2 Dec 2015

A1 Telekom Austria has announced the launch of voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) functionality. In a brief media announcement the telco confirmed that VoLTE has been enabled for A1 Go! Premium customers since 30 November. The upgrade is currently available via three handsets, namely: the Sony Xperia Z5, the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact and the Samsung Galaxy S5, although a trio of Samsung Galaxy devices will be added to the portfolio in due course.

In unrelated news, Liberty Global has revealed plans to unify the names of its cable subsidiaries in Austria and Switzerland under its preferred UPC brand. A rebranding exercise will take place during the course of 2016, with current brands ‘UPC Austria’ and ‘UPC Cablecom’ simplified to ‘UPC’. CEO Eric Tveter commented: ‘It’s time for an optical change. We work together as a company and want to be perceived as a company’.

Liberty Global altered its corporate strategy last year, relocating the management of its Austrian and Swiss units to a central hub in Zurich from 1 August 2014.
