Smile debuts VoLTE services in Uganda

24 Nov 2015

The East African wireless broadband provider Smile Communications has launched the region’s first voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) services in three cities in Uganda, allowing it to offer high-definition voice and video calling alongside its mobile data services. The VoLTE service is initially available in Uganda’s capital city, Kampala, as well as Entebbe and Mukono, and will later be rolled out in Jinja, Mbale, Soroti, Tororo, Lira, Gulu, Masindi, Kasese, Fort Portal, Kabale, Mbarara and Masaka. Alcatel-Lucent was the main equipment supplier for the deployment and has also conducted network integration, project management and testing activities. The introduction of VoLTE means that Smile can now compete directly with the country’s established cellular operators, which include MTN, Airtel, Uganda Telecom Ltd (UTL), Africell and Vodafone/Afrimax.
