Chile’s WOM launches LTE

16 Nov 2015

Chilean cellco WOM has launched LTE services in Santiago and Vina del Mar, with plans to roll out coverage in Arica and Parinacota, and Tarapaca regions by the end of November and all other regions by end-December. In a bid to drive take-up, the cellco is also offering 100GB of free data to all existing and new customers with compatible devices, available as 10GB per month for ten months. Announcing the launch last week, WOM CEO Chris Bannister was quoted by local news outlet Wayerless as saying: ‘We decided to launch our 4G network in Vina del Mar because we want to give a clear signal of decentralisation. Gradually, by the end of the year we expect to deploy our network throughout the country, to reach those users who want good service at fair prices and to join this revolution.’ WOM’s LTE network uses AWS spectrum (1700MHz/2100MHz), becoming the first operator to make use of the frequency range for 4G services in Chile, with its rivals currently utilising the 2600MHz spectrum band for 4G.
