Movistar launches 1900MHz LTE service in Managua

13 Nov 2015

Movistar Nicaragua has confirmed that it has launched LTE technology in capital city Managua, using 1900MHz spectrum. The cellco has said that subscribers can use no fewer than 30 different 4G handsets at launch, and claims they can expect to experience download speeds up to ten times faster than those offered by its 3G network. The cellco had been expected to utilise alternative frequencies for its long-awaited 4G launch; as per parent company Telefonica’s 2014 20-F filing Movistar holds 4G spectrum rights to a 40MHz block in the 700MHz band and a 40MHz block in the 2100MHz/1700MHz AWS band.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, in October 2015 Claro stole Movistar’s thunder when it activated its 2100MHz/1700MHz 4G network in the cities of Managua, Esteli, Leon and Matagalpa.
