nbn reports strong 3Q15 progress, pilots HFC product

The company managing Australia’s national broadband network, nbn (formerly NBN Co), has reported ‘strong customer and revenue growth’ in the third quarter of 2015. As at 30 September, 1.38 million homes were ready for service, up 91% from the same date one year ago, while active end-users on nbn’s network reached 610,000 premises, an increase of nearly 130% year-on-year. Revenue of USD71 million was reported for the quarter, an increase of 150% year-on-year. nbn CEO Bill Morrow commented: ‘The figures give the company confidence that it is tracking well towards its full-year targets. At the same time we have recently set the course for the completion of the rollout. Our recent corporate plan, coupled with our construction plan for the next three years, covers 85% of the country, with the remainder of the rollout on course to be completed by 2020.’

Further, nbn has commenced an end-user pilot utilising HFC technology, with around 300 homes and four service providers involved in the trial, which is taking place in the suburb of Redcliffe, Queensland. nbn’s corporate plan expects approximately four million homes and businesses, equating to around one third of Australian premises, to eventually receive broadband via HFC technology. Morrow added: ‘The pilot marks pleasing progress for our HFC product. It will pave the way for the commercial release of HFC in 2016, marking the release of the final MTM (Multi-Technology Mix) technology. It will also help put us on course to meet our target of delivering better broadband to eight million homes by 2020.’
