PT Telekomunikasi Selular (Telkomsel), a 65%-owned subsidiary of state-run PT Telkom Indonesia, has launched 4G LTE services in the city of Manado, the eighth location to be upgraded to the advanced platform to date, after Jakarta, Bali, Bandung, Medan, Surabaya, Makassar and Lombok. Commenting on the launch, Telkomsel director Ririek Adriansyah said: ‘The launch of 4G LTE services in Manado is part of our commitment to develop eastern Indonesia [with advanced technology]. Manado is a city experiencing increased demand and consumption of data service usage and, as a result, we have responded with the launch of our 4G LTE network.’ According to Ririek, in the first six months of this year demand for data services in Manado surged 30% when compared with the same period of 2014. Further, he said that around 45% of its subscribers in the city are data subscribers, noting too that about 30,000 subscribers are signed up to one of its handset-based mobile 4G tariff plans. Telkomsel is using a 10MHz block of spectrum in the 1800MHz band to carry its LTE signal in Manado. It claims that it can achieve peak data flow rates of up to 75Mbps. It has already rolled out 35 eNode B 4G base stations which cover strategic locations in the city, including the Mega Mall Manado, Manado Town Square and the airport area; city coverage is estimated at 80%. Currently, Telkomsel has deployed more than 1,200 4G base stations nationwide and signed up approximately 1.3 million customers.
