Kyivstar to launch TV for fixed broadband users in partnership with Viasat by end-2015

6 Oct 2015

Ukrainian mobile and fibre broadband network operator Kyivstar, part of the Vimpelcom group, plans to launch television services for its fixed internet users by the end of 2015 in partnership with Viasat, its marketing director Sviatoslav Horban told Interfax-Ukraine. ‘All our Home Internet subscribers in more than 100 cities of Ukraine will be able to take advantage of this service. We will implement this project in partnership with Viasat,’ the executive confirmed, adding that customers will be offered more than 100 national and international TV channels and a library of movies and documentaries, among other television services.

Kyivstar reported 817,000 residential fibre broadband customers at the end of June 2015. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Kyivstar, which is Ukraine’s mobile market leader serving over 26 million cellular subscribers, has explored various TV platform options, including over-the-top (OTT) channel partnerships, and ‘trial’ IPTV services which fell foul of the country’s regional IPTV broadcasting licensing regime, as the broadcasting regulator withheld full commercial IPTV permits from the operator. Reports of negotiations with satellite TV provider Viasat first surfaced in 2013.
