Claro unveils LTE network in four Nicaraguan cities

5 Oct 2015

Hot on the heels of Movistar’s announcement that it is poised to switch on its LTE network ‘very soon’, rival operator Claro has stolen its thunder by launching commercial 4G services in Nicaragua over 2100MHz/1700MHz AWS spectrum. At launch connectivity is available in four cities: Managua, Esteli, Leon and Matagalpa. Marketing manager Diego Sibrian told local newspaper El Nuevo Diario that existing subscribers can switch their SIM cards for free of charge at one of Claro’s customer service centres.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, both Claro and Movistar hold the rights to a 40MHz block in the AWS band alongside a 40MHz block of 700MHz spectrum; all frequencies are designated for LTE use.
