Vodafone launches VoLTE in Portugal

30 Sep 2015

Vodafone has announced that it has activated voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) technology across its Portuguese 4G networks, claiming a first for the domestic market in the process. The UK-owned mobile operator notes that VoLTE functionality will be made available gradually, depending on a customer’s handset. At launch the upgraded service will be available via the Microsoft Lumia 640 and the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, but in the coming months, VoLTE will be extended to all manufacturers and models that support compatible software.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Vodafone switched on its first LTE network in March 2012 and currently offers 4G connectivity via the 800MHz, 1800MHz and 2600MHz bands. The cellco’s LTE networks cover 90% of Portugal and its autonomous regions, the Azores and Madeira.
