Movistar Nicaragua: 4G launch will occur ‘very soon’

30 Sep 2015

Movistar Nicaragua has staged a media event in Managua detailing its plans to introduce 4G LTE technology ‘very soon’. Juan Manuel Arguello, Telefonica’s country director, told assembled journalists: ‘This technology represents a major step in the evolution of the global communication industry’, adding that the speeds on offer will be ten times faster than those supported by the cellco’s 3G infrastructure. While the executive did not reveal a concrete launch date, a 4G section has now been added to the company’s website allowing subscribers to sign up for network updates.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, as per Telefonica’s 2014 20-F filing, Movistar holds the spectrum rights to a 40MHz block in the 700MHz band and a 40MHz block in the 2100MHz/1700MHz AWS band; both blocks are designated for LTE use and expire in 2023.
