HughesNet passes 1m VSAT subs mark in US

10 Sep 2015

US-based satellite broadband solutions provider Hughes Network Systems has confirmed that its domestic subsidiary HughesNet has passed the one million subscriber mark. The parent company claims that this figure makes HughesNet the ‘world’s largest’ satellite internet service provider (ISP). Meanwhile, Hughes Network Systems notes that the number of its very small aperture terminals (VSATs) shipped globally has passed the five million mark, giving it a 50% share of the overall VSAT market. Hughes Network Systems is a wholly owned subsidiary of EchoStar Corporation.

According to recent statistics provided by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), as at 31 December 2014, the US accounted for a total of 2.410 million satellite broadband users.
