NBN to cover more than nine million premises by 2018

24 Aug 2015

Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN) will be accessible to more than nine million premises across the nation by 2018, with more than four million of those expected to have signed up for a service over the infrastructure. Such targets have been outlined as part of the first comprehensive ‘Corporate Plan’ published by nbn (formerly NBN Co), the company tasked with overseeing the network rollout. In a press release regarding its future targets, the company said that the introduction of additional technologies, a projected boost to the size of the construction workforce and newly-signed agreements with the construction industry will all contribute to a doubling of the number of connectable premises over the next three years. With some 4.4 million forecast to have signed up for an NBN-based service by 2018, such uptake is expected to deliver a ten-fold increase in revenue for nbn to AUD1.7 billion (USD1.24 billion). Commenting on the plans, nbn chief executive Bill Morrow was cited as saying: ‘This is a bold plan that puts us in striking distance of our ultimate goal of delivering better broadband to every Australian by 2020 … The steps we have taken over the past twelve months have already delivered increases in revenue, activations and serviceable premises. The work to date has also given us a more accurate picture of the actual costs of the build.’

Separately, nbn revealed that it has met its FY2015 targets, having doubled the number of serviceable premises, the number of active end users and revenues in the twelve months ended 30 June 2015. To that end, it confirmed that the number of premises able to order an NBN-based service had risen from 553,000 at mid-2014 to 1.2 million a year later, while the number of homes and businesses with an active connection totalled 486,000 at end-June 2015, up from 210,000. Revenues, meanwhile, were AUD161 million in FY15, up from AUD60 million in the previous fiscal year, while capital expenditure rose to AUD3.3 billion, in line with the expansion of the infrastructure rollout.
