Ugandan wireless broadband provider Smile Communications, which offers services over a TD-LTE 4G network, says it is close to launching the continent’s first commercial voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) services. The new service will bring high-definition voice calls with instant connections, no dropped calls and no background noise. The company says it has invested well over USD40 million in its network rollouts in Uganda. The 4G system currently covers Kampala, Entebbe and Mukono, and additional sites are being deployed over the next few months in Jinja, Mbale, Soroti, Tororo, Lira, Gulu, Masindi, Kasese, Fort Portal, Kabale, Mbarara and Masaka. While Smile’s service is currently marketed as a data-only offering, the addition of voice capability will see the firm competing squarely with the country’s mobile network operators.
