3 Hong Kong has partnered with vendor duo Huawei and Qualcomm to demonstrate Hong Kong’s first end-to-end Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) and Time Division Duplex (TDD) LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) commercial network, using carrier aggregation (CA). The operator expects to launch its two component carrier (2CC) FDD TDD LTE-A network in early 2016, with compatible devices likely to be made available at the same date.
Additionally, the cellco is in the deployment phase of a three component carrier (3CC) CA-capable LTE-A network, which it aims to make available for commercial launch in the second half of next year. Meanwhile, as the only local cellular operator that currently possesses 900MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz, 2300MHz and 2600MHz spectrum, 3 Hong Kong says it intends to launch a TDD network ‘later this year’.
Commenting on the developments, Peter Wong, CEO at 3 Hong Kong, said: ‘CA technology enables us to fully utilise valuable spectrum resources and devise long-term plans on network deployment … 3 Hong Kong plans to re-farm the 900MHz and 2100MHz spectrums for our LTE network in the near future, and we remain committed to establishing a 5CC LTE-A network.’
