Vodafone CR trials tri-band carrier aggregation, paper says

3 Jul 2015

Vodafone’s Czech mobile unit is reported to be testing tri-band carrier aggregation (CA) to achieve peak speeds of 350Mbps/50Mbps (down/uplink) on its LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network. According to an unconfirmed story from Telecompaper, the mobile operator is working with China’s Huawei Technologies in the trials which aggregate the 800MHz, 1800MHz and 2600MHz bands – albeit noting that the highest frequency band is not yet available commercially in the country.

TeleGeography notes that Vodafone Czech Republic has invested CZK5 billion (USD206.7 million) in its LTE network over the past two years. The cellco announced that at 31 May 2015 its 4G LTE network comprised more than 3,000 base stations, providing coverage of 80% of the geographical territory with an emphasis on covering regional cities and suburban/non-urban areas. Moreover, in combination with its Turbo Internet 3G service, the cellco claims to be able to deliver mobile broadband internet to 97% of the population in 87% of the Republic. Further, as of March this year, 80% of the devices sold by the company support the newer LTE standard. The LTE-A network is available in Brno, Karlovy Vary and Prague and offers a maximum download speed of 225Mbps. During May 2015 it launched 4G in the following cities: Czech Budejovice (South Bohemia Region); Modrice (Brno-Country district, South Moravian Region); Chodov (Sokolov, Karlovy Vary Region); Jablonec nad Nisou, Liberec, Novy Bor (Czech Lipa district, Liberec Region); Turnov (Semily district); Koprivnice (Novy Jicin, Moravian-Silesian Region); Pardubice (Pardubice Region); Kolin, Mlada Boleslav, Podebrady (Nymburk district, Central Region); and Jirkov (Chomutov, Usti nad Labem Region).
