Defunct Sotelgui could relaunch next month

1 Jul 2015

Guinea’s minister of communications Oye Guilavogui has announced that defunct state-owned full-service telecoms operator Societe des Telecoms de Guinee (Sotelgui) is expected to relaunch over the summer, and should be operational by the end of August 2015. According to local news site Aminata, Guilavogui has revealed that 61 cell sites are expected to be installed in ‘all the regional capitals’ to enable the network to go live by the proposed deadline.

TeleGeography notes that the mooted relaunch follows a string of similar promises from the telecoms minister. As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, in December 2014 Guilavogui declared that Sotelgui would resume operations in February 2015, with 4G services added to its portfolio. Prior to this, the minister said in August 2014 that the telco would be up and running ‘soon’ with the first calls to be made over the network by the end of that month. Meanwhile, back in January 2014, the official promised that the telco would be back in action before the end of that year.
