Megacom expands 3G coverage, improves network capacity

14 May 2015

Megacom, Kyrgyzstan’s largest cellco by subscribers, continues to expand its network footprint, announcing that it has extended 3G coverage to the settlements of Arpa Tektir, Jetim-Debe, Kalmatay and Nasirdin in the Osh Oblast. Additionally, new base transceiver stations (BTS) have also been installed in the Chuy, Talas, Osh, Issyk Kul, Jalal-Abad and Batken provinces in order to increase network capacity. Further, the operator notes that it is now providing ‘3.75G’ coverage to various locations via the deployment of dual carrier (DC)-HSPA+ technology.

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that Megacom has operated a 2G GSM network in Kyrgyzstan since April 2006, while it launched 3G services in January 2012. Its 3.5G network is future-proofed to support the evolution to 4G LTE technology, although it is not yet clear when the operator intends to launch LTE services.
