HKT, Huawei demo 450Mbps LTE-A ahead of 2016 launch

24 Apr 2015

Hong Kong’s largest full-service telecoms operator HKT (including CSL) has demonstrated 450Mbps-capable LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) services using tri-band carrier aggregation (CA) in partnership with Huawei Technologies, which supplied its IP-RAN technology. HKT, part of the PCCW group, achieved a 435Mbps peak download performance at a media briefing using three 20MHz spectrum blocks and its existing transmission network, and says that the tri-band CA network will go commercial next year. Huawei noted that the 450Mbps IP-RAN network solution uses inter-site CA to combine carriers from multiple cell sites to maximise coverage and capacity.

In December 2014 HKT (CSL) commercially launched LTE-A at peak (theoretical) speeds of 300Mbps with compatible ‘Cat 6’ devices available to users, upgrading the previous 150Mbps top LTE speed, via aggregating 2×20MHz contiguous spectrum in the 1800MHz and 2600MHz bands.
