Uzmobile launches GSM/W-CDMA networks in capital

Uzbmobile, the wireless services arm of state-backed fixed line provider Uzbektelecom, has launched GSM and W-CDMA networks in areas of Tashkent city and region. The cellco’s GSM platform uses frequencies in the 900MHz and 1800MHz ranges and has been upgraded with GPRS and EDGE technology, whilst the W-CDMA network uses 2100MHz spectrum and has been upgraded with HSPA+ technology to provide theoretical maximum downlink speeds of up to 21Mbps. Although coverage is currently limited to areas of the Tashkent district, the cellco plans to exented service nationwide throughout 2015-2017. Uzmobile also operates a CDMA-450 network, which it will continue to operate in parallel to the new system. Meanwhile, UzDaily writes that Uzmobile is planning to make 4G services available in areas of the capital, although no further details were announced.
