Deutsche Telekom unit T-Mobile Czech Republic has revealed that in the past five years the number of smartphones and smart devices sold as a proportion of total device sales has increased six-fold, from 12% to 76%. Citing data extracted from its own internal sources, the cellco says that Android is the more prevalent operating system and notes too that sales of tablets have grown ‘dramatically’ – in line with global trends – achieving a 15-fold increase in the past two years alone. Although globally, the Apple iPad is responsible for driving tablet uptake, in its home market T-Mobile CR points towards the huge popularity of its affordable Prestigio product range.
The carrier’s findings also point to the fact that penetration of smartphones and devices supporting the fastest data access via Long Term Evolution (LTE), now stands at 7% overall (within in the operator’s network), with T-Mobile reporting that sales of such devices have increased 49% year-on-year over the last twelve months, largely as a result of better affordability. With VoLTE being added to the service portfolio, T-Mobile is increasing its focus on LTE handsets and has ramped up its range accordingly, confirming a total of 43 out the total 63 available handsets supported LTE at February 2015.
