Fijian telecoms group Amalgamated Telecom Holdings (ATH) has announced that it has been selected by the government of Kiribati as the winner of an auction for the assets of Telecom Services Kiribati Ltd (TSKL) for a price of AUD7.5 million (USD5.72 million). TSKL – up until now 100% state-owned – is Kiribati’s sole operator of mobile, fixed line and broadband services. According to ATH’s announcement on its website, ‘the parties will now progress towards settlement and closing through the establishment of a new operating company in Kiribati to effect the transaction, transfer the assets and provide telecommunications and ICT services.’
TeleGeography notes that TSKL operates a 2G mobile network across the far-flung Pacific island nation of Kiribati, recently complemented by 3G and 4G in Tarawa and Christmas Island, with a total of about 20,000 subscribers. In addition to mobile broadband and voice, the company offers fixed-wireless WiMAX data services plus ADSL on its fixed telephony network.
TSKL’s new owner ATH is a Fijian state-backed group which operates in the telecoms sector via subsidiaries including Telecom Fiji Limited (TFL), Vodafone Fiji, Internet Services Fiji Limited (Connect) and Fiji International Telecoms Limited (FINTEL).
