Swede fibre uptake seen in regular broadband digest

24 Mar 2015

Sweden’s Post & Telestyrelsen (PTS, or Post and Telecom Agency) has released its annual Broadband Survey for 2014, showing that 61% of all households and businesses in Sweden had access to fixed broadband speeds of at least 100Mbps at the end of October 2014, an increase in coverage of four percentage points over the same date in 2013, while in the same timeframe the availability of fibre (FTTH/FTTB) broadband connections increased by five percentage points to 54%. Furthermore, the proportion of Swedish households and businesses located ‘in the vicinity’ of a fibre connection reached 75% in October 2014, a year-on-year increase of six percentage points, while of the households meeting the necessary technical conditions for 100Mbps-plus internet, 38% had subscribed by end-October 2014, compared to 36% found to have done so in the same survey twelve months earlier.

In rural regions, access to fibre increased from 9% of premises in October 2013 to just over 13% a year later, while on a local basis 30 municipalities saw an increase of ten percentage points or more, and in four municipalities the increase was above 30 percentage points. Goran Marby, director general of the PTS, said the rural figures should increase dramatically in the coming years, given the SEK3.25 billion (USD379 million) that the Swedish government has allocated for broadband deployment in rural areas.

In the wireless segment, by end-October 2014 the PTS indicated that 99.6%-99.7% of all households and businesses nationwide had access to broadband via 4G LTE mobile networks, while the corresponding figure for rural homes/businesses was 98% (an increase of 2.5 percentage points since October 2013).
